Yep, those were definitely male/staminate flowers in the picture.

If they'd been allowed to keep growing until they opened, they would almost certainly have released pollen. However, when male flowers are picked before they ripen, it's rare to see any pollen inside them even when they're opened.

The big question is whether this plant will continue to produce staminate flowers. It's hard to predict. It's possible that the ones you picked off were the only ones it will make (somewhat supported by the fact that the male pods grew at the bracts/nodes rather than next to the pistillate flowers). There's also a chance that it will continue produce male flowers in an attempt to self-pollinate. The only way to be sure is to keep a close eye on it for the rest of flowering.

If inspecting every day or two, it shouldn't be too hard to spot any new staminate flowers that grow from this plant and remove them before they have a chance to open.

Nope, removing male flowers won't slow flowering.
