custard had breakfast at MilliWays this morning and when he got back he started staring out of his favourite window again when he noticed that two of the three northern lights cuttings he had put in tap water in brown glass bottles on the sill of said window had started to root. unfortunately one of them has also started to flower. custard will not be keeping this one as the time involved nursing it through reversion shock and back to a vegetating state is too costly and he just cant be arsed. so custard has one option left and to be honest she looks like a cracker and he's pretty sure shes off one of the bigger girls in the patch in round two. custard is just in the process of putting it together. photos to follow shortly.

custard says for his next trick he is going to take the girl in bottle 4 that he has been rooting in sunshine and tap water and then transplant her to and grow her in some of the gravel he collected from the hydroton from "show time" that he has been cleaning recently and then light her with a two colour 120w LED fixture.

custard will be making mothers bed out of stuff he had lying round the house and just to make things interesting he's going to show you how he did it.
1, small wooden ikea childs toy cot. (custard was going to use this to hang his intake fan and filter assembly but it didnt work out, too short)
1, 3.4l square plant pot
enough gravel to fill the pot from the cleaning of the other set of hydroton (custard recycles his pebbles and has two lots for his one system used in rotation (being cooked with cannzym to clean now by a radiator)
1 recycled 5kg chicken container
1 strip of plastic that is black on one side and white on the other
1 small funnel (custards came from poundland aways back)
1 short length of tube that will fit on the end of the funnel
two strips of stickyback plastic (sellotape wont quite do it)

custard almost did a blue blue peter and presented one he had prepared earlier but thought it only fair that he show you in the hopes of inspiring you to trying new and unusual things

custard says hes going to leave mother in her bottle of water but move her in to her new home shortly he says the reason shes staying in the bottle is because she needs more time to develop her root stock before being transplanted in to her new bed. custard also says that his timers will be set with the GLR settings of 12hrs on, 5.5hrs off, 1hr on, 5.5hrs off to complete mothers 24hr cycle.

custard was wondering how he could start a seed in the above system and make it truly hydroponic without rock wool or peat pellets because he was broke and didnt have any. and after thinking for a bit about the nature of hydroponics and of the how and why and where of it being invented all those thousands of years ago he came up with this idea. a pyramid tea bag with its apex snipped off and emptied of its tea and then refilled with clean fine sand. plant your seed in the sand and put the tea bag on a saucer and add some water. custard has the tea bag and the seeds but no sand. not yet anyway....

custard says if you are thinking of using his sand bag technique that you should use the same sand you buy for a childs sandpit. never use coarse or builders sand. as the coarse sand will not hold enough water and the builders sand will have large amounts of contaminants in it you will have to wash out first. custards first thoughts were with using silver sand which he might still do if he would stop staring out of the window long enough to go find some of both the silver and the childs sand.

custard was staring out of the window again (the kitchen one this time) when he noticed a bag of sand in the garden that he had forgotten about. thanking his lucky stars that it wasnt raining or snowing he put his shoes on and went outside to get some.

now custard says that you should NEVER EVER bring anything from your outside garden in to your inside garden. custard says the risk of pathogens and hitch-hikers coming in on this stuff is a risk you should never take.
now custard has two choices. he can either bake the sand in the oven @220c for 30 minutes so its dry or cook it in a steel bottomed deep sided frying pan till dry and hot. this custard says will kill off anything hiding in the sand. custard says that there are lots of precautions that need to be taken whilst doing this as it will be extremely hot and will need a few hours to cool down. one thing custard isnt sure about and that is the smell generated by this process. custard is leaning towards using the pan as he doesnt really want to be stinking the oven out if it smells at all.

custard says fresh sand from the shop in a sealed bag wont have to be treated in this fashion and is fine to use as is straight from the bag.

custard says that the heating process didnt smell and that he got some interesting patterns in the sand as it came up to the boiling temperature of the water. custard said he did this over a low heat stirring with a wooden spoon all the time till all the water had evaporated. while it was cooling custard was looking out of the window again thinking about cake when it occurred to him to sieve the sand when it was cooled. he's pretty happy he did as this is what came out.

alrighty then, after some interruptions who wouldnt stop speaking twaddle and took ages to leave custard has finally finished mothers new bed complete with bedding.

custard is using the principal of the river bank strata to get this to work. he filled the tea bag with enough sand so it would stand up on its own with the funnel, he then placed the rooted clone in the tea bag and filled it up with sand to the top with a teaspoon and sat it in a saucer of cooled boiled tap water. the capillary action of the sand sucked up the water so custard knows mother wont be thirsty for a few days now. (custard will find out shortly if he needed to wash to the sand as well as heat sterilize it but oh well fingers crossed). custard then layered mothers pot with the larger grade of hydroton in the bottom two thirds and the smaller grade making up the the top layer with mothers tea bag being buried so that none of it pokes above the surface of the stones. and there you have it, mothers bed. as a way to avoid water loss through evaporation custard has filled mothers reservoir with the big grade hydroton as well. and finally custard didnt have any tape or sticky plastic so the water level window he was going to cut into mothers reservoir and then seal with the tape will have to wait as custard can just use his finger tip to get the same results. custard say he is going to use rain water to start and then use formulex to feed her with.

custard says NEVER EVER let the reservoir dry out. an inch of water in the bottom at all times should be plenty.

so there you have it, take a clone rooted in water and sunshine and then grow it in sand and pebbles and water. how hard or expensive can that be? custard says its not hard when you think about it. just for an experiment and kicks custard is going to start a seed in a clear 2ltr soda bottle using the same technique so that he can see the root development and get a better understanding of whats going on underneath as he currently doesnt have much of a clue and seeing it like that will help explain plenty. oh and another thing, custard will not be using an extractor fan or filter for this. as he is using an LED fixture the heat coming off it will not be a problem and normal convection will keep the temperatures at an acceptable level. custard will be back with some photos in a few days when she either keels over or gets her roots down and takes off.

just a little update, mother has started to flower, so the timer has been set to 24hrs on till she comes round and gets some good new growth. custards awful camera is to rubbish to photograph the pistil development but none the less they are still there. custard will be back in a few weeks when she perks up. or sooner if she doesnt pull through and is destined for the composting bin.

this is mothers sister who was cut and rooted at the same time in exactly the same fashion. auntie is the one who was flowering so i left her in her bottle. the yellowing of her leaves is from her recycling them to produce roots and new leaves that are better suited to the light she is receiving now as she is also sharing mothers bed for the time being.
